The Volvo 240 started out as an updated 140 but turned into an institution. More than 2.8 million 240s sold worldwide from 1974-1993. The Volvo 240 series was initially available in six variations: 242L, 242DL, 244DL, 244GL, 245L, and 245DL. The 240 looked similar to its predecessor because they shared the same body shell and were generally the same from the cowl rearward. However, the Volvo 240 parts – that is, what was inside the 240 – made all the difference. The safety features on the Volvo 240 were greatly improved, including large front and rear end crumble zones. In 1976, the Volvo 240 came equipped in the United States with a new fuel injected OHC B21 F motor. Oxygen sensors, developed in conjunction with Bosch, were introduced as a new Volvo 240 part in 1977.
